Women’s ODI WC: We’re on the right track, now it’s about the big stage, says Charlotte Edwards

England’s women’s cricket team head coach Charlotte Edwards says her squad has hit the perfect balance as they gear up for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. The team feels “on the right track” after strong showings in recent warm-ups, with their tournament opener against South Africa set for Friday in Indore.
Edwards highlighted how players have adapted well to a fresh approach in their game. “The results from our last four matches have been really positive,” she told ESPNCricinfo. “We’re staying grounded, but we know we’re heading in the right direction ahead of that first game.”
England cruised through their build-up, winning all four warm-up matches in Abu Dhabi and Bengaluru. Highlights included a massive 153-run victory over co-hosts India and a tense four-wicket win against defending champions Australia. Edwards pointed out that the confidence comes not just from the wins, but from how the team played. “These aren’t just friendlies against top international sides,” she said. “We’ve gained a lot from our style of play, and I think we’re in a great spot right now.”
A big boost came from the return of captain Heather Knight, who scored 41 off 48 balls in her first match back since a hamstring injury in May. “Heather is key to our success here,” Edwards noted. Leading the side now is Nat Sciver-Brunt, who smashed a powerful 120 off 104 against India. Even with an Achilles niggle, she’s ready to bowl too. “Nat’s in top physical shape and loves getting stuck into her bowling,” Edwards added. “It even sharpens her batting. We’re aiming for a full 10 overs from her.”
England’s spin attack stands out as a strength, with Edwards calling their four spinners among the world’s best. “From my coaching experience here, spin has been huge—even in T20 and WPL cricket,” she said. It could play a major role on Indian pitches during the World Cup.
Fielding, once a weak point, has improved sharply. “The players have stepped up under pressure, which is exactly what we needed,” Edwards shared. She’s focused on the future, creating a team environment built on accountability and clear strategies. “We’re not dwelling on the past—it’s all about how we play now.”
Edwards wrapped up on a high note: “This clarity should help us handle the big moments. We’ve left no stone unturned in prep, and the progress over the last six months has been impressive. Now, we just need to bring it to the World Cup stage.”
