Afghanistan’s top spy chief, Abdul Haq Wasiq, is headed to Turkey for fresh talks with Pakistan. The delegation will leave Kabul this Wednesday, heading to Istanbul where the third round of peace talks is set to begin on Thursday. Turkish and Qatari officials are mediating, hoping to calm rising tensions along the shared border.
During the meetings, the Afghani delegation will press Pakistan on several hot‑button issues. The main worry is the spread of militant groups that blow up in both countries, especially the Tehreek‑e‑Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Islamabad has asked Kabul to produce a written promise that it will stop Afghan support for these fighters.
The first and second rounds of talks in Doha and Istanbul failed to make progress because the two sides could not agree on how to handle cross‑border insurgency. Analysts see this Istanbul session as a chance to rebuild trust, set up joint border patrols, and improve counter‑terrorism cooperation.
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, speaking to state‑run media, confirmed that the delegation is on its way. He said the Taliban still wants to stay in dialogue with Pakistan, but some elements in the Pakistani military are fighting that goal. Mujahid noted that while the civilian Pakistani government wants stronger ties based on shared interests, some of the army’s actions are undermining those efforts.
He also pointed out economic hurt, saying traders on both sides are losing money because Pakistan has closed border crossings along the Durand Line. Mujahid urged Pakistan to share intelligence on Afghan‑based terrorists, stressing that the Islamic Emirate wants security inside and outside Afghanistan and remains committed to preventing threats from spilling over.
These remarks come as Pakistani forces have recently carried out cross‑border operations in Afghanistan, inflaming tensions just before the new round of negotiations in Turkey. The upcoming talks are therefore under close scrutiny, as both governments and security analysts hope the sessions will finally lead to a practical plan for border security and stronger trade links.
