In Washington, the fallout from last week’s election rout is still being felt. President Donald Trump, speaking publicly for the first time since the ballots were counted, blamed the prolonged federal government shutdown for hurting the Republican Party in key contests across three states.
When he met Republican senators at the White House on Wednesday, Trump told them that the shutdown was a “big factor” that pushed voters toward Democrats. He tried to pin the losses on the shutdown with the added headline that “Trump wasn’t on the ballot” and that “shutdown, were the two reasons that Republicans lost elections tonight,” a line he posted on Truth Social.
The race outcomes were clear: Democrats kept the New York City mayoralty and New Jersey’s governorship. In Virginia, voters took the governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general seats from Republicans. Meanwhile, California voters struck back at Trump’s strategy by approving a redraw of congressional districts that could cut the Republican count by at least five seats. With Republicans holding 219 seats in the House and Democrats 213, a loss of just four seats would shift the balance of power.
Trump pressed Senate Republicans again to end the filibuster, saying it was the only way to pass legislation. “If you don’t terminate the filibuster you’ll be in a bad shape. We won’t pass any legislation,” he warned, but GOP leaders remain opposed to the move.
The shutdown, now in its 36th day, tops the historical record as the longest U.S. government shutdown. The political and budgetary fallout continues to play out as the parties regroup after the election losses.
