Bihar: Prem Kumar files nomination for Speaker; likely to be elected unopposed
On Monday, the veteran BJP stalwart Prem Kumar—who has just clinched the Gaya Sadar seat for the ninth straight term—submitted his nomination to become the Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. Sources say he is expected to win without contest, with the final decision slated for Tuesday.
After filing, Prem Kumar told reporters,
“I have filed my nomination today for the post of Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, the results of which will be declared tomorrow. I welcome the decision of our leaders and express my gratitude to the party leadership.”
He also thanked the voters of Gaya Sadar, calling his repeated victory a “mandate of trust and responsibility.”
The 18th Bihar Legislative Assembly kicked off its inaugural session on December 1, 2025, which will run through December 5. On the opening day, every newly elected MLA took the oath of office and secrecy, overseen by Pro‑tem Speaker Narendra Narayan. The election for the Speaker’s chair is scheduled for the second day of the session.
With the new NDA government headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar now in place, the winter session operates amid heightened security. The Patna district administration has activated Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, barring all protests, demonstrations, and processions around the assembly complex for the session’s duration.
A heart‑warming scene unfolded on the first day when Ramkripal Yadav—who won the Danapur seat on a BJP ticket and once leaned close to RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav—took his oath, then respectfully touched Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s feet for a blessing. He went on to hug Tejashwi Yadav, marking the first public embrace between uncle Ramkripal and nephew Tejashwi, which drew considerable media attention.
All 243 newly elected MLAs were sworn in that day. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary led the proceedings, followed by Deputy CM Vijay Sinha.
