China Congratulates Nepal’s New Interim PM Sushila Karki
China has warmly congratulated Sushila Karki on her new role as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister. The news came from China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson on Sunday, highlighting the strong, long-standing friendship between the two nations.
In a statement shared by the Chinese Embassy in Pretoria, officials said, "China congratulates Madam Sushila Karki on becoming Prime Minister of Nepal’s interim government." They added that China respects Nepal’s independent choices and stands ready to boost ties. This includes promoting the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, increasing exchanges, and deepening cooperation in various fields to strengthen Nepal-China relations.
Karki, a 73-year-old former Chief Justice of Nepal, officially takes charge at Singha Durbar at 11:00 am on Sunday. Her appointment follows intense political changes in the Himalayan country, sparked by days of violent protests led by frustrated Gen Z youth. These protests erupted over political stagnation, corruption, economic inequality, and a controversial ban on social media platforms.
The shift happened after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned amid the unrest. Protesters, through an online public vote on Discord organized by Gen Z leaders, picked Karki for her reputation of integrity and independence. This rare show of unity in Nepal politics won support from both young activists and traditional parties craving stability.
As she steps into the role, Karki has started talks with advisors and Gen Z figures to build her Cabinet, according to reports from The Kathmandu Post. An aide revealed she’ll kick off intensive discussions Sunday morning. Though she controls all 25 ministries, Karki plans a lean team of no more than 15 ministers, echoing demands from civil society and the youth movement for efficiency and reform.
Potential picks include legal expert Om Prakash Aryal, ex-army official Balananda Sharma, retired justice Anand Mohan Bhattarai, Madhav Sundar Khadka, Asheem Man Singh Basnyat, and energy specialist Kulman Ghising. Meanwhile, Gen Z groups are buzzing on platforms like Discord, suggesting candidates who fit their push for change. If everyone agrees, the new Cabinet could swear in as soon as Sunday evening—or push to Monday if talks drag on.
In a big move, Nepal’s Parliament dissolved on Friday, just hours after Karki’s swearing-in. The President’s Office announced fresh elections for March 5, 2026. This sets up a six-month transitional government under Karki to guide the nation through the turmoil toward the polls.
This development marks a fresh chapter for Nepal, with international eyes on how Karki’s leadership and Nepal-China ties will shape the future.
