India’s top diplomat, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, sent warm wishes to Equatorial Guinea on Sunday to mark the country’s 57th anniversary of independence. In a short post‑share on X (formerly Twitter), he emphasized India’s commitment to deepening the development partnership with the West‑African nation.
> “Warm greetings to FM Simeon Oyono Esono Angue, the Government and the people of Equatorial Guinea on the 57th anniversary of their Independence. Committed to strengthening our development partnership.” 🇮🇳 🇬🇶
The message came after a series of talks that began earlier this year. On February 10, the first India‑Equatorial Guinea Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) was held in Malabo. The meeting was co‑chaired by Sevala Naik Mude, India’s Additional Secretary for Central and West Africa, and Matias Nguema Mba Medja, Equatorial Guinea’s Secretary General for Foreign Affairs.
During the FOC, both sides reviewed the full spectrum of their bilateral ties. Key focus areas included trade, investment, mining, agriculture, health and pharmaceuticals, education, capacity building, defence and maritime security, digital public infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. The diplomats agreed to strengthen cooperation in these sectors and to work together more closely in multilateral forums such as the United Nations and the African Union.
Minister Mude also met with several senior officials from the Equatorial Guinean government—Health Minister Mitoha Ondoo Ayekaba, Foreign Affairs delegate Marcos Mba Ondo, Finance Vice‑Minister Pedro Abeso Obiang Eyang, and Transport Secretary Jose Eko Owono Esono—to discuss practical ways to boost joint initiatives.
An important theme was the African Union’s bid to become a permanent member of the G20. Secretary General Mba Medja thanked India for its support, noting that the AU’s inclusion would enhance the Global South’s voice at the G20 table.
Overall, the meetings reaffirm India’s growing engagement in Central Africa and signal a bright future for trade, investment, and people‑to‑people ties between India and Equatorial Guinea.
