In a historic move, Nepal’s new interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki has declared that the people killed in the recent anti-corruption protests will be honored as Martyrs. Their families will receive 1 million Nepali rupees as compensation, she announced shortly after taking office.
Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu, the 73-year-old former Chief Justice – who became Nepal’s first woman Prime Minister – shared these details about the September 8 protests. “All those who lost their lives will be remembered as Martyrs, and their families will get one million rupees each,” Karki said. She added that the government will cover medical expenses for the injured and provide them with compensation too. Plus, the state will help transport the bodies from Kathmandu to other districts for families.
Karki didn’t stop there. She promised a thorough investigation into vandalism during the Nepal anti-corruption protests, where personal properties were damaged or burned. “We won’t ignore those affected. The government will explore options like soft loans or other support to help them rebuild,” she assured.
This comes amid massive unrest sparked by Gen Z protesters frustrated with political stagnation, corruption, and economic inequality in Nepal. The protests exploded after a social media ban, leading to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation. In a unique twist, young leaders on Discord held an online public vote and picked Karki for her integrity and independence. Even traditional politicians backed her, seeing her as a stabilizing force.
Karki took the oath on Friday, and just hours later, her first cabinet meeting at 11 pm dissolved Nepal’s Parliament. Fresh elections are now set for March 5, 2026, kicking off a six-month transitional government to guide the country through this turbulent time.
The interim PM made it clear: this government isn’t about clinging to power. “We’re here to fix things and hand over to the people after six months,” she said. She praised the protests as a groundbreaking movement in Nepal, driven by demands for economic equality and zero tolerance for corruption. As Nepal navigates this change, Karki’s leadership could mark a turning point for the Himalayan nation.
