Libya’s national elections commission affirms readiness to hold presidential elections

Tripoli – November 30 (LatestNewsX) – Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC) declared on Sunday that it is now fully prepared to run the country’s presidential elections, according to a post on its official Facebook page.

The commission explained that the recent municipal‑council elections helped sharpen the technical skills needed to tackle the challenges of the upcoming presidential and parliamentary polls, Xinhua News Agency reported. Early plans point to a May‑March 2026 start for the vote, with a possible push into mid‑April 2026 if funding, security, and a clear framework can be secured amid the coexistence of Libya’s two rival governments.

The HNEC also urged the UN Support Mission in Libya to focus on settling the key disputes about amendments to the electoral laws, calling for a quick resolution so it can issue the necessary rules and procedures. It added that any solution must come from Libyans themselves, stressing that the nation cannot be built through outside influence or regional agendas.

In a statement, the commission reiterated that only a return to the ballot box can heal the country’s divisions and restore legitimacy, pledging to keep acting with professionalism, neutrality and integrity as it moves the nation toward change.

The announcement follows a formal request by Aguila Saleh, speaker of the east‑based House of Representatives, made on Friday for the HNEC to immediately begin preparation for presidential elections. Over the last days, protests erupted in several eastern and southern cities demanding a nationwide election to end the political split.

Since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been divided between two governments: the Tripoli‑based Government of National Unity led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, and the eastern administration appointed by the House of Representatives and headed by Osama Hammad.
