Nepal’s Gen Z Protests: Death Toll Hits 72 as Interim PM Sushila Karki Steps In
The Gen Z protests in Nepal have turned tragic, with the death toll climbing to 72 on Sunday, according to a police official speaking to . Out of these, 59 were protesters, three were police officers, and 10 were inmates trying to escape during the chaos.
In a big move, Nepal’s new interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki has declared that all those who lost their lives in the anti-corruption protests will be honored as Martyrs. Their families will receive 1 million Nepali rupees as compensation. Karki, a former Chief Justice, made this announcement right after taking charge on Sunday.
During a press conference in Kathmandu, she clarified that the martyrs include everyone who died on September 8. "The government will cover medical costs for the injured and provide them compensation too," she added. The state will also help transport the bodies from Kathmandu to other districts for families.
Karki didn’t shy away from addressing the damage caused by the protests. She promised investigations into acts of vandalism and said the government would focus on rebuilding. Personal properties got burned in the unrest, and she assured, "We won’t leave people in the lurch. The government will offer help, maybe through soft loans or other support measures."
This interim government, she stressed, isn’t about clinging to power. "We’ll hand over after six months at most," Karki said. The protests, led by Nepal’s youth, mark a historic moment—the first of its kind demanding economic equality and an end to corruption.
It’s a milestone for Nepal: 73-year-old Sushila Karki became the country’s first woman Prime Minister. She was sworn in on Friday amid the widespread Gen Z uprising, sparked by frustration over political stagnation, corruption, economic gaps, and a controversial social media ban. As Nepal grapples with these anti-corruption protests, eyes are on how her leadership will bring change.
