Seek BRICS membership, looks forward to India’s support: Palestinian Ambassador to India

Palestine is pushing to join the BRICS group and has started talks with its members, hoping India will lend a hand. Palestinian Ambassador to India, Abdullah Abu Shawesh, told that his country sees BRICS as a vital stage for emerging economies and wants to become a full member soon.

“BRICS is a very important platform, and we look forward to being a full part of this,” Abu Shawesh said. “We are already in discussion with all the BRICS members, and we look forward to India supporting our request.”

The ambassador praised India’s role in global forums and urged New Delhi to back Palestine’s bid. BRICS brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and it just added new countries like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. If Palestine joins the BRICS expansion, it could amplify its voice on key issues, including the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict and the quest for wider international recognition.

But Shawesh didn’t hold back on his sharp criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, calling them “genocide.” He highlighted the heavy toll after nearly two years of fighting—725 days of what he described as “continuous massacres” and “textbook genocide” by Israeli forces.

“Around 65,000 to 66,000 innocent Palestinians have lost their lives,” Shawesh said. “Gaza lies under rubble, and the majority of people are displaced.”

He argued that true peace depends on Israel’s actions, not just its promises. Shawesh accused the international community of giving Israel a free pass, treating it like a state above international law and blocking real progress in the Middle East.

“It’s so easy,” he added. “We will not stop saying that when Israel abides by international law and agreed resolutions, peace will be there. But as long as Israel gets full impunity, peace won’t return to the Middle East.”

On the hostage crisis, Shawesh called for the release of both Israeli and Palestinian detainees. He pointed out that about 12,000 Palestinians are locked up in Israeli prisons, facing daily torture and mistreatment. “Our position is clear: hostages should not be taken at all, whether Palestinian or Israeli,” he said.
