In Seoul, the former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo‑ahn was taken into custody on Wednesday. Police arrested him after he ignored three court summonses. The move comes as South Korea’s special counsel team, led by Cho Eun‑suk, investigates the fallout from former President Yoon Suk‑yeol’s attempted declaration of martial law.
Hwang‑Kyo‑ahn, who had served under former President Park Geun‑hyе, had been active on Facebook since the martial‑law announcement on December 3. His posts urged people to “eliminate” pro‑North Korean groups and anyone linked to alleged vote fraud. He also demanded that National Assembly Speaker Woo Won‑shik and People Power Party leader Han Dong‑hoon be arrested.
The special‑counsel unit has a broad mandate: it is searching for evidence of anyone who encouraged the martial‑law move, set up detention sites, or plotted an armed uprising. Its investigation began after a complaint from an online media outlet. When the investigators tried to enter Hwang’s Yongsan‑Ward home, he kept the door closed and they were initially blocked. After his detention, the team finally entered and seized documents and equipment related to the case.
Earlier, on October 27, the same special‑counsel team had already raided Hwang’s house during the investigation of his alleged incitement of violence. In March, a civic organization had reported him to the police, accusing him of stirring up trouble ahead of the Constitutional Court’s ruling on President Yoon’s impeachment.
This arrest highlights the growing scrutiny of former officials involved in Yoon Suk‑yeol’s controversial martial‑law effort and the broader political tensions in South Korea. The case is under close watch, with many hoping for a transparent outcome that settles how far political rhetoric can be pushed before it crosses into illegal incitement.
