Kathmandu – At least three climbers died after an avalanche hit Yalung Ri, a 5,630‑metre peak in Dolakha district, northeast Nepal. The loss was reported Monday morning, roughly 90 minutes from the base camp.
Three people – two Nepali nationals and a foreigner – were swept away. The incident involved a team of 12 mountaineers. “We have confirmed that two Nepali climbers and one foreigner are dead,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Gyan Kumar Mahato, head of Dolakha police.
Four other foreign climbers are buried under the snow, while five members of the group have returned to camp safely. Police can’t reach the site yet because the area is remote and the weather is bad. Helicopters were sent but strong winds and low visibility forced them to turn back.
The avalanche struck near Yalung Ri, inside Gaurishankar Rural Municipality‑9, between the Gaurishankar and Rolwaling ranges. Rescue teams from the Nepal Police, Army and Armed Police Force are moving by road, while a helicopter stationed in nearby Na Gaun will wait for clearer skies.
Chief District Officer Narayan Prasad Risal said the full picture of the missing climbers won’t be known until Tuesday, when the search party arrives. A rescue mission is planned for early Tuesday morning, depending on weather conditions.
The incident highlights the danger of Himalayan climbing, especially during sudden weather changes, and underscores the need for robust search and rescue capabilities in remote Nepalese mountains.
