Wild new bodycam footage captures moment cops shoot and kill gun-waving maniac on Seattle street
A man waving a handgun was shot dead by Seattle police during a high‑ris danger encounter that took place in broad daylight on a city corner. New body‑camera footage released by the department captures the tense exchange.
The confrontation unfolded around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday after a barrage of 911 calls warned officers that a stranger was walking down the street with a weapon and pointing it at random pedestrians, the police said in a statement.
“Hey, you guys better send somebody quick,” one caller instructed the dispatcher. “There’s a dude walking up the hill on Othello between Rainier—he’s walking up Othello from Rainier.”
He was described as “He got a gun. He’s got a gun in his hand and he’s just pointing it at everybody that drives by.” The dispatcher also noted the gunman was “pistol‑waving.”
Video shows the unrecognised suspect approaching officers while holding the firearm, ignoring their repeated commands to drop it. “Drop it, drop it,” one officer shouted. “Drop the gun!” The officers then opened fire, firing more than two dozen rounds and bringing the man down.
After the initial burst, the man sat upright, held up the weapon again and was shot multiple times, remaining down when the officers finished. “SPD rendered medical aid,” the department said, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting will be reviewed by the King County Sheriff’s Office, following Seattle Police Department policy. Chief Shon Barnes told KOMO‑TV News that while compliance and de‑escalation are always preferable, sometimes officers have no luxury of time when someone is armed and moving toward them or the public. Police did not say whether the officers involved will be off duty while the investigation proceeds.
