Nepal’s interim government just got a boost with three new ministers joining the cabinet. On Monday, they took their oaths at Sital Niwas in Kathmandu, the official residence of the President. This move comes as the country works to steady its politics after recent unrest.
Leading the pack is Kulman Ghising, the ex-boss of Nepal Electricity Authority. He’s now in charge of the Ministry of Energy, Urban Development and Physical Infrastructure. Next up, Om Prakash Aryal, a well-known lawyer, steps into the Ministry of Law and Home Affairs. And rounding out the trio is Rameshwor Khanal, Nepal’s former finance secretary, who will handle the Ministry of Finance.
The oath-taking ceremony happened bright and early, with visuals showing the leaders ready to dive into their roles. This expansion is part of efforts by the interim setup to get things back on track following Nepal’s political shake-up.
It all started after days of fierce anti-corruption protests turned violent. Late Friday, President Ram Chandra Poudel picked Sushila Karki, a former Chief Justice, to lead the interim government. She officially started on Sunday. The cabinet additions were supposed to happen then, but her busy day pushed it to Monday.
Sources say Karki is still eyeing more names for key spots. She’s reviewing candidates, chatting with them about plans, and holding interviews to build a strong team. As Nepal’s new Prime Minister, she has until March 5 to hold fresh elections and hand over to a parliament-picked leader.
On the ground in Kathmandu, life is slowly picking up, but it’s not quite normal yet. The capital is reeling from the protests, and locals say businesses are hurting. “Things haven’t returned to their usual pace. Fewer people are out and about, and everyone’s still grieving,” shared resident Sabita Surkheti. She painted a picture of quiet streets and slumping sales in the heart of Nepal’s bustling city.
As Kathmandu heals from the chaos, folks are holding out hope for real political stability once those promised elections roll around. Nepal’s path forward looks promising with this fresh cabinet in place.
