Bangladesh Facing Its Worst Crisis in Over a Decade

Bangladesh is going through a serious and troubling crisis, the worst in over ten years. The country is battling rising violence, economic struggles, rising unemployment, and widespread unrest under its current interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

One of the most alarming issues is the sharp increase in violence against women. According to reports, in just the first half of 2025, there have been over 4,200 cases of rape and sexual assault, including at least 650 gang rapes. This is a big jump from about 3,100 cases during the same period last year. Experts warn this shows the social and law enforcement system is breaking down, leaving women increasingly vulnerable.

Political experts, like Bangladeshi journalist and historian Syed Badrul Ahsan, say the country’s politics are in chaos. He criticizes the current government, which took power after removing the elected government of Sheikh Hasina in what many see as an unconstitutional move. Since then, chaos and violence have worsened, with mobs and supporters disrupting everyday life across Bangladesh.

Ahsan explains that the government’s failure to bring order has made many people call for the return of Sheikh Hasina’s government, which they see as more stable. Meanwhile, minorities face growing threats and human rights violations. The current regime is accused of restricting press freedom, silencing opponents, and misusing laws like sedition and the Information and Communication Technology Act against rivals.

The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, is also criticized for ignoring constitutional norms. It has sidelined President Mohammad Sahabuddin, who is the only constitutional authority in the country today. Many feel the current administration is not qualified to oversee the upcoming elections, set for February 2026, due to its controversial actions.

There was a shocking incident earlier this year when a mob destroyed the residence of Bangladesh’s founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in Dhanmondi, while security forces stood by. Residences of opposition leaders were also vandalized, highlighting the lawlessness spreading across the nation.

Despite these problems, many Bangladeshis are realizing the importance of restoring law and order. The security forces have acted quickly against small groups trying to cause trouble, and their actions send a message about maintaining peace, even if the government seems divided on how to handle the crisis.

Analysts argue that for Bangladesh to recover, a major political change is needed. The current interim government, led by Yunus, is not seen as legitimate or capable of holding fair elections. Yunus came to power without a clear legal mandate, and many believe his rule is based on force and manipulation, not the law. Critics say the judiciary has remained silent on these issues, which deepens the crisis.

As Bangladesh faces these challenges, people hope for a return to stability, justice, and democratic rule. The road ahead is uncertain, but restoring law and order remains a top priority for the future of Bangladesh.
