Cyclone Ditwah: Red alert in TN’s Tiruvallur, Ranipet; multiple districts to get heavy rainfall

Chennai, Nov 30 (LatestNewsX) – The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has escalated warnings as Cyclone Ditwah pushes deeper into the Bay of Bengal, issuing a red alert for Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts this Sunday and warning of very heavy rain and vigorous winds. The storm, now intensifying over the southwest Gulf of Bengal, keeps heading toward the Tamil Nadu‑Puducherry coast, dropping broad rain bands and posing a threat of dangerous wind speeds across many northern and central districts.

In a further display of the storm’s severity, the IMD has placed Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Villupuram on an orange alert, predicting that rainfall will range from very heavy to extremely heavy for the day. As Ditwah inches closer to the shoreline, atmospheric instability has risen sharply, raising the chance of intense downpours during the overnight hours. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai added that Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri are also expected to have sustained heavy showers.

Salem, Kallakurichi and Cuddalore, together with the adjacent Puducherry region, should brace for significant rain as the cyclone’s outer spiral bands sweep inland. Wind concern remains high: the IMD predicts gusts up to 75 km h⁻¹ across the southern coastal and delta districts—especially Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukottai—while northern coastal areas and Puducherry may see winds near 80 km h⁻¹, threatening power lines, trees and public shelters.

Despite the elevated alert status, officials have tempered expectations by noting that most districts, except Tiruvallur, may experience a drop in rain intensity as the cyclone weakens after land interaction. Disaster response teams are already on standby, and district officials are urging residents to stay indoors, avoid water‑logged zones, and hew closely to official guidance. With Ditwah still shaping weather across much of Tamil Nadu, authorities stress the next 24 hours are critical for saving lives and minimizing damage. Citizens are advised to keep emergency supplies handy, monitor weather updates regularly, and steer clear of rivers, coastlines and flooded spots until conditions settle.
