Congresswoman Deborah Ross has strongly condemned the shocking assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, stressing that violence has no place in America. Just a day after the 31-year-old was gunned down at a university event in Utah, the North Carolina Democrat called on politicians to tone down heated rhetoric and lead by example.
In an exclusive chat with in Washington on Thursday, Ross said elected officials like her must take responsibility for cooling off the political fire. “We’ve seen too much of this—remember the assassination attempt on President Trump over a year ago, and the tragic killing of Minnesota lawmakers,” she pointed out. Ross didn’t hold back, adding that even the President of the United States has sometimes fueled violence through his words. “We all need to set a better tone for Americans,” she urged.
As the nation reels from the Charlie Kirk shooting, a massive manhunt is on for the killer. Utah police have released two images of a key person of interest, and tips are pouring in—over 200 so far. Investigators are chasing multiple leads, including a high-powered hunting rifle, a palm print, and a shoe impression found in woods near Utah Valley University campus. The FBI is sweetening the pot with a $100,000 reward for info that leads to the suspect’s arrest.
President Donald Trump shared an update from the White House, telling reporters that authorities are making “big progress” in the investigation. When asked how he wants his supporters to react to Kirk’s death, Trump praised the activist’s commitment to non-violence. “He was all about peace—that’s how I like to see people respond,” the President said. In a heartfelt tribute earlier, Trump announced Kirk will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously.
The tragedy unfolded Wednesday evening when Kirk was speaking at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University. Shots suddenly rang out, sending attendees into panic. The young leader was rushed to a hospital but sadly passed away from his injuries soon after.
Kirk, who founded Turning Point USA (TPUSA) at just 18 back in 2012, turned it into America’s top conservative student group. Based in Arizona, TPUSA now boasts over 800 chapters on college campuses nationwide. It played a huge role in rallying young conservative voters, especially during the 2024 election that helped secure Trump’s re-election. Kirk’s death leaves a big void in the conservative movement, sparking widespread mourning and calls for unity amid rising political tensions.
