In Moldova’s tense parliamentary election, the pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) is surging ahead with 46% of the votes, while the pro-Russian Patriotic Bloc trails at 27%, according to the Central Electoral Commission. Officials counted 90% of ballots as of late Sunday, with Al Jazeera reporting the latest figures from Chisinau.
This vote feels like a high-stakes showdown: Will Moldova push toward European Union membership or slide back under Moscow’s influence? Tensions run high amid widespread accusations of Russian interference trying to sway the outcome.
Voter turnout hit a solid 51.9%, with more than 1.59 million people casting ballots—up from just over 48% in the 2021 election. That includes about 264,000 Moldovans voting at stations abroad, showing strong engagement in this pivotal race.
The election picks a new 101-seat parliament, and President Maia Sandu, a pro-Western leader, will nominate a prime minister from the top party or bloc. That person then works to build a government that parliament must approve.
After voting, Sandu doubled down on claims of massive Russian meddling. “I voted to keep the peace, and our future belongs in the EU,” she told reporters, per Al Jazeera.
PAS leader Igor Grosu echoed her concerns once polls closed at 9 p.m. local time. “Russia’s attempts to hijack the process were huge,” he said. “State institutions fought hard to protect the vote’s security and integrity. We can’t yet gauge the full impact—let’s wait for the final results and stay patient and calm.”
PAS has controlled a strong majority in parliament since 2021, facing off against several Russia-friendly rivals. But with no clear pro-European allies in the mix, the path forward remains uncertain for Moldova’s EU aspirations and its rocky ties with Russia.
