Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Poudel swore in four new ministers to the interim government on Monday in a live televised ceremony at his office in Kathmandu. This move bolsters the team led by Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who took over on September 12 after former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned amid deadly protests across the country, including Kathmandu.
The newcomers bring fresh expertise to key areas. Anil Kumar Sinha, a former Supreme Court justice, steps up as minister for industry, commerce and supplies, as well as land management, cooperatives and poverty alleviation. He also takes charge of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, which had been handled by Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal. Mahabir Pun joins as minister for education, science and technology. Madan Prasad Pariyar will lead agriculture and livestock development, while Jagdish Kharel oversees communication and information technology.
This adds to the cabinet’s strength—the first three ministers came on board back on September 15. The interim government now focuses on steering Nepal toward stability ahead of a general election scheduled for March 5, 2026.
India has voiced strong backing for Nepal’s efforts to restore peace and stability. During a media briefing last Friday, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted India’s “unwavering support” as a close neighbor and fellow democracy. “We welcomed the new interim government right away,” Jaiswal said. He noted a recent phone call between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Karki, where Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to helping Nepal rebuild quickly.
Jaiswal emphasized that India stands ready to work hand-in-hand with Nepal for the prosperity of people on both sides of the border. “It’s a special relationship we’ll keep strengthening,” he added.
Modi himself spoke with Karki on Thursday, offering condolences for the lives lost in the protests and pledging full support for her leadership. In a post on X, Modi shared: “Had a warm conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability. Also extended warm greetings to her and the people of Nepal on their National Day tomorrow.”
