India has warmly welcomed the new interim government in Nepal, led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. The country hopes this political shift will bring much-needed peace and stability to its neighbor.

In a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared its support for the change. “We welcome the formation of a new Interim Government in Nepal, led by Right Honourable Mrs Sushila Karki. We are hopeful that this would help in fostering peace and stability,” the MEA said. It also reaffirmed India’s strong commitment to Nepal. “As a close neighbour, a fellow democracy and a long-term development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries.”

At 73, Karki made history on Friday night when President Ramchandra Paudel swore her in as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister. She becomes the first woman to take on this key role in the nation’s history. Her appointment came after intense political turmoil, including mass protests that forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign and his government to collapse.

Kathmandu officials say Karki emerged as a consensus choice during an emergency meeting. It involved President Paudel, top military leaders, and heads of the youth-led protest movement that sparked the upheaval.

These Gen Z protests started over a controversial social media ban but soon exploded into a broader fight against corruption, elitism, and poor governance in Nepal’s politics. The government lifted the ban earlier this week, but the demonstrations grew fiercer, highlighting demands for transparency and equality.

Tragically, Nepal Police reports show at least 50 people have died since the protests turned violent on Monday.

President Paudel has promised that Karki’s interim government will hold fresh parliamentary elections within the next six months, paving the way for a stable future.
