Nepal’s Youth-Led Revolution: Gen Z Protests Spark Massive Change

Last week, Nepal witnessed a fierce uprising led by Gen Z protesters, the country’s young generation pushing hard for big reforms. This explosive movement, triggered by claims of deep-rooted political corruption and a sudden ban on social media, has turned deadly. At least 72 people lost their lives, and over 1,000 others suffered injuries in the chaos.

Angry crowds took to the streets, setting fire to Nepal’s parliament building, hotels, shops, and even politicians’ homes. They chased corrupt leaders while shouting demands for an end to corruption, better job opportunities, economic fixes, and a government that actually listens to the people. The protests hit hard in Kathmandu and spread across the Himalayan nation, shaking its fragile democracy.

Nepal’s fight for democracy isn’t new. It all kicked off back in 1979 when students rose up against the monarchy, forcing a vote on multi-party rule. But over the years, one government after another has let down the people, eroding trust in institutions. This time, the government’s decision to block 26 popular social media platforms—like TikTok and Instagram—pushed things over the edge. Protesters saw it as a desperate move to silence dissent and protect those in power from the Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli administration’s scandals.

What started as online frustration exploded into real-world action, thanks to the Gen Z movement. Students, feeling the heat of unemployment and inequality, jumped in with full force. They organized through the Discord messaging app, giving the protests a modern, digital twist. This youth-led activism is tackling Nepal’s tough socio-economic and political headaches head-on.

At the heart of it all is 36-year-old activist Sudan Gurung, founder of Hami Nepal (meaning "We are Nepal"). He rallied thousands using Discord and Instagram, even bypassing the bans with VPNs. Under fake online names for safety, Gurung made bold calls that drew lakhs of young Nepalis to the streets. Their massive marches forced Prime Minister Oli to step down.

The protests paid off big: Nepal appointed Sushila Karki, the country’s first woman Chief Justice, as interim Prime Minister until elections on March 5, 2026. Known for her no-nonsense stance on corruption and strong belief in the rule of law, Karki brings fresh hope. Gurung played a key role in pushing for her leadership.

Gen Z leaders Arjun Shahi and Tanaka Dhami spoke to India Today on September 14, making it clear their fight isn’t just against Oli. "We’re targeting all leaders and officials whose bad governance and corruption dragged Nepal into this mess," they said. Calling the protests a "do-or-die" battle, they promised to keep going until real change happens. Importantly, they stressed they’re not picking the next government—they just want to overhaul the system for true accountability.

This movement is a direct hit at "nepo kids" and the elite class showing off their riches while the youth struggle. It’s sparked a generational showdown, with viral slogans like "Rise up from every village, rise up from every town" spreading fast on TikTok, VPNs, and chat apps. Nepal’s young people, long ignored politically and economically, used their digital savvy to challenge the old guard.

Interim PM Karki has promised her government is just a temporary bridge to the elections. She says it will align with Gen Z’s vision for a fairer Nepal. The young leaders are also calling on other nations, especially India, to step up with investments to boost Nepal’s economy.

For India, Nepal holds a special spot as a Hindu-majority neighbor with deep ties. The two share an open 1,750 km border touching states like Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Sikkim. India hosts a huge Nepali community and over 43,000 brave Gurkha soldiers serving in places like Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeast.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Karki on her new role, pledging India’s full support for Nepal’s peace, progress, and prosperity. With her sharp understanding of India-Nepal relations, Karki could help strengthen trade across the border, keep Chinese influence in check, and ensure stability in the region.

As Nepal’s Gen Z revolution unfolds, it’s clear the youth are rewriting the nation’s story—one protest, one viral post at a time.
