Afghan police beat back armed smuggling in several provinces as they swept illegal weapons across the country. In the east, officers in Panjshir province stopped a convoy at a checkpoint and seized more than three AK‑47 assault rifles, a pistol, a pair of binoculars and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. The smuggler was arrested before he could load the contraband onto a vehicle and slip out of the border.
Police spokesperson Haqmal Saad said the find was part of a broader effort to keep illegal arms from reaching civilians. He urged anyone who sees suspicious weapon activity to contact security forces. “We will not tolerate the possession or transport of weapons anywhere in the province,” Saad told reporters.
The Panjshir raid was not an isolated incident. Earlier in the week, security officials in Kandahar province raided a house in the southern region and took into custody three people linked to an arms‑smuggling ring. The team recovered a Kalashnikov rifle, a hand grenade, a machine gun and dozens of bullets.
On November 6, officers in Daykundi province uncovered a cache of firearms and ammo in a private dwelling in the Pato district. The loot included three more Kalashnikov rifles, a rocket‑propelled grenade, a machine gun, two hunting rifles and a large stock of bullets. One of the suspects was booked for illegally possessing the weaponry.
The Afghan government has made it clear that it will continue to clamp down on illicit arms trafficking. Police have pledged to work with local communities to report and remove suspicious weapons. “People must not keep or carry arms illegally,” the Daykundi police statement declared.
These operations come as part of a nationwide campaign to secure Afghanistan after the fall of the previous regime. The authorities emphasize that securing the country means collecting illegal weapons from anyone, whether they belong to civilians or armed groups. By targeting smuggling networks and confiscating arms, Afghan police aim to reduce violence and protect innocent civilians.
