In New Delhi on November 24 (LatestNewsX), India underscored how the polar regions are increasingly central to the world’s climate, economy and security.
During the kickoff of the Science and Geopolitics of Arctic‑Antarctic (SaGAA) VIII 2025, titled “Confrontation to Collaboration in a Fractured World,” Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Sibi George, spoke about India’s approach to the North and South Poles. He urged global stakeholders to collaborate, add scientific value and behave responsibly.
“He alluded to India’s rich maritime history and its Indo‑Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) which is based on the principle of rules‑based maritime order anchored in UNCLOS and assured of India’s positive collaborative approach to the polar issues,” the MEA said.
Alongside the conference, George met Camilla Brekke, Director of the Norwegian Polar Institute, to discuss India’s bilateral cooperation with Norway in the Arctic, the MEA added.
The forum gathered more than 50 leaders from science, industry and policy, aiming to strengthen science diplomacy and address challenges across the Arctic, Antarctic and Himalayan cryosphere.
India has long envisioned the Indo‑Pacific as a free, open, inclusive, peaceful and prosperous region, grounded in a rules‑based international order that respects sovereignty, freedom of navigation, unimpeded lawful commerce, peaceful dispute resolution and equality among nations.
To achieve this vision, India has built robust bilateral and multilateral ties with key Indo‑Pacific partners and like‑minded countries, promoting security and growth across the region under the SAGAR framework.
“To give a concrete shape to our Indo‑Pacific Vision, India announced the Indo‑Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) in 2019. India continues to refine its approach by deepening defence and maritime security cooperation, catalysed by economic and developmental assistance, to safeguard its interests and look forward to productive collaboration with other countries in the region and beyond,” Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita said in a Rajya Sabha reply earlier this year. He added that the government keeps a close watch on developments affecting India’s interests and takes all necessary measures to protect them.
