Prime Minister Narendra Modi will kick off a year‑long celebration of India’s national song “Vande Mataram” on Friday at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. The event will also see the launch of a special commemorative stamp and coin.
The ceremony marks the beginning of a nationwide observance that will run until November 7, 2026, to honour 150 years since the song was first published. “Vande Mataram” was written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in the 19th‑century novel Anandamath and became a rallying hymn for India’s freedom movement. Today it still evokes strong feelings of pride and unity.
Around 9:50 a.m. a mass rendition of the full version of “Vande Mataram” will be sung in public places across the city. Citizens are encouraged to join in and sing together during the main programme.
The celebration comes as the year 2025 marks the 150th anniversary of the song’s first appearance. It debuted on November 7, 1875 – a date that coincides with Akshaya Navami, an important festival in the Hindu calendar. The song first appeared in the literary journal “Bangadarshan” and quickly became a symbol of India’s struggle for independence, portraying the motherland as a source of strength and dignity.
In addition to the Prime Minister’s ceremony, the Delhi Legislative Assembly will host a special programme to honour the milestone. Speaker Vijender Gupta will unveil a commemorative plaque celebrating the 150 years. The Assembly will also feature a cultural performance by artists from the Sahitya Kala Parishad, highlighting the patriotic spirit inspired by the song. The building will light up in the colors of the national flag in the evening.
“‘Vande Mataram’ is not just a song – it is the soul of India’s freedom movement and a timeless ode to our motherland,” Gupta said. “By commemorating this historic milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to the ideals that shaped our nation.”
The year‑long observance aims to keep the spirit of unity, sacrifice, and patriotism alive for all Indians. With the Prime Minister’s participation, the release of the stamp and coin, and the cultural celebrations, 150 years of “Vande Mataram” will continue to inspire a new generation.
