Former Indian cricketer and Aam Aadmi Party MP Harbhajan Singh kicked off the Durga Puja celebrations in Kolkata by inaugurating a vibrant pandal at Ashok Nagar’s Sarbojonin Durgotsav on Sunday.
Singh couldn’t hide his excitement about joining the city’s festive spirit. “First, I want to thank Maa Durga for this chance to be here,” he told reporters. “Kolkata always showers me with so much love. I pray that Goddess Durga blesses everyone, keeping us all happy and healthy.”
Just days earlier, on Mahalaya Amavasya, thousands of devotees flocked to the Ganga in Kolkata for a sacred dip. They offered prayers to their ancestors and departed loved ones, honoring the rituals of Pitru Paksha with deep devotion. This tradition draws huge crowds every year, as people across India take holy baths in rivers and perform Pind Daan on Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the final day of the fortnight dedicated to forefathers.
Now, as Sharadiya Navratri begins, temples nationwide buzz with energy. Devotees rush to worship Goddess Durga and her nine powerful forms over the next nine days. In one highlight, Sri Kanakadurga takes on the role of Sri Maha Chandika Devi, representing the Trishakti—Mahalakshmi for prosperity, Mahakali for strength, and Mahasaraswati for wisdom. Legends say she emerged to defeat evil and safeguard the good.
Sharadiya Navratri stands out as a lively Hindu festival celebrating the divine feminine power of Goddess Durga. Falling in the Ashwin month of the lunar calendar, it features intense prayers, colorful rituals, and fun cultural events. Each night honors a unique aspect of the goddess, from courage to kindness. People fast, sing bhajans, and dance to Garba and Dandiya beats, filling the air with joy and community spirit.
