Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat announced on Sunday that anyone who considers India their home can join the organization, regardless of their caste or religious background. The message came in response to questions about the RSS’s stance toward Muslims and other minority groups.
“We welcome Brahmins, Shaivas, Muslims, Christians and everyone else as long as they identify as Indians,” Bhagwat said in Bengaluru. “Only Hindus are admitted – but we define Hindu as anyone who calls this land their mother.” He stressed that members should set aside differences and work together inside the Shakha (local unit).
When asked if Muslims are allowed, Bhagwat answered that the RSS treats all devotees like sons of Bharat Mata. “We don’t look at your background. Every member is a Hindu of India,” he said. The outreach program is meant to connect with groups that were previously left out, especially religious minorities, but the RSS does not impose its ideology on them.
“The RSS says we do everything for anyone,” Bhagwat explained. “Each person must fulfil their duty and achieve progress. We provide tools, but we do not give guarantees. Those who come ready to work on their own goals can succeed.” He added that if people work for a good cause, the RSS will support them.
When the question of opening schools for Muslims arose, Bhagwat clarified that the RSS does not establish schools for specific communities. “Our focus is on developing human beings. Volunteers run independent organizations that become self‑reliant,” he said. He noted that Vidya Bharati runs Shishu Mandirs—children’s schools—in Muslim neighborhoods, but these are autonomous and not funded by the RSS.
Bhagwat continued to speak about reaching younger people and embracing technology. “Gen Z is active on social media, so we must meet them where they are,” he said. He recalled that his founder, Balasaheb Hegdewar, once went to a cinema hall with volunteers, showing that the organization can adapt to cultural trends. “We will keep evolving with the times, but the core truth remains: Hindustan is a Hindu nation.”
He also said the RSS welcomes anyone who respects this principle, including transgender individuals, and that participation in Shakha programmes remains open as long as members align with the Hindu nation philosophy.
In summary, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat calls for inclusivity among Indians who identify as Hindus, emphasizes self‑sufficiency, and stresses the organization’s commitment to outreach without imposing its teachings on minority religions.
