Union Home Minister Amit Shah urged people across India to rally behind Made in India products as the country gears up for major GST reforms starting September 22. Speaking at an event in New Delhi on Wednesday, Shah called on everyone to pledge buying only Indian-made goods to cut down on imports and boost the Swadeshi movement.
With Diwali and Navratri just around the corner, Shah had a special message for the women of Delhi. “Mothers and sisters, take charge at home and start shopping from September 22,” he said. “GST rates on festive items will drop to 0% and 5% from the earlier 28% and 18%. Shop as much as you want, but stick to Made in India products. Let’s make promoting our own goods a habit – that’s how we’ll build a prosperous India.”
These changes come from the 56th GST Council meeting, which simplified GST rates by merging the 12% and 28% slabs into just two: 5% and 18%. This GST rate rationalization aims to make shopping easier and more affordable for everyone.
Shah also spotlighted Delhi’s push towards better waste management and sustainability. He highlighted the new Narela Bawana Phase 2 Energy Plant, which will handle 3,000 tons of waste every day to produce green energy. The Okhla plant will process 2,000 metric tons of waste to generate electricity too. “Those massive garbage mountains, taller than the Qutub Minar, embarrassed us globally,” Shah noted. “Now, these initiatives will fuel a circular economy, create clean energy, and turn Delhi into a greener city in no time.”
On a celebratory note, Shah praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 75th birthday, crediting him for uplifting 140 crore Indians through strong security, economic growth, and welfare schemes. “PM Modi treats every state like family, whether it’s run by BJP or opposition parties,” Shah added. “Even under the Arvind Kejriwal government, Delhi got more than its share. In his 11 years, he’s secured the nation, boosted development, brought energy to poor households, and inspired the young with dreams of a great India. These achievements will echo for generations.”
