Amaravati, Oct 12 – The Andhra Pradesh government has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the Mulakalacheruvu spurious liquor scandal. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced that the team will be led by GVG Ashok Kumar, the Inspector of Police from the Eluru Range. Three senior IPS officers – Rahul Dev Varma, Mallika Garg and K. Chakravarthi – will join him, along with an expert from the state Excise Department.
The SIT will conduct a full probe and overhaul the system. Naidu said 23 people have been named in the case and 16, including the main accused Janardhan, are already in custody. He also announced the suspension of a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) senior leader for his alleged role.
“We will not tolerate bribery or cover‑ups, no matter who the accused is,” the chief minister said. “There is no room for politics to shield anyone who tries to escape responsibility.”
The scandal involves spurious liquor believed to have come from Africa, with conspirators trying to replicate the practice in Andhra Pradesh. Naidu pointed out that TDP leaders were the first to highlight the Mulakalacheruvu case.
Some opposition parties have called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry, but Naidu warned that the state will act decisively against anyone using politics to dodge accountability. He cited the 27 deaths in Jangareddygudem in 2019‑24 and said the previous government failed to stop the danger of fake liquor.
The chief minister also reminded Excise department staff to follow the law strictly or face consequences. To help curb the abuse, the state has launched the AP Excise Suraksha App. Liquor shop owners must scan the bottle before sale, and buyers can double‑check all the way. The app also geo‑tags shops, making it harder for illegal outlets to operate.
Naidu declared the move a step toward a safer, cleaner market for Andhra Pradesh’s citizens and promised a tough stance against those who use fake liquor as a political weapon.
