Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a touching tribute to the late singer Zubeen Garg on Tuesday, saying the music world lost a one-of-a-kind talent. “There will never be another Zubeen,” Sarma wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter, as fans prepared for Garg’s final journey.
Just hours before the farewell, Sarma joined thousands of grieving supporters at Sarusajai Stadium to honor the beloved Assamese icon. The past two days highlighted the massive love people across the state have for Garg, who touched hearts with his soulful songs and energetic performances.
On Monday, emotional crowds lined up outside the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati for one last glimpse of Zubeen Garg. Fans waited patiently in long queues, many wiping away tears over the shocking loss of their cultural hero. One devastated supporter told , “What do I even say? I don’t have words. The entire state is grieving. We’ve all been crying since we heard the news. It was a shock for everyone. He was loved by all. May his soul rest in peace.” Another fan broke down in sobs, adding, “It’s a sad moment. He was a good human being. We’re just speechless.”
The last rites for Zubeen Garg will take place on Tuesday, September 23, at his ancestral home in Kamarkuchi village, Sonapur. Sarma told reporters that officials plan to move Garg’s mortal remains from the sports complex around 8 a.m. to the village for the ceremony. A state funeral is set for the same day, drawing even more admirers to say goodbye.
Sarma also addressed questions about Zubeen Garg’s death, which happened in Singapore during the Northeast India Festival. The death certificate from the Singapore High Commission lists drowning as the cause, but Sarma clarified it’s not the same as a full post-mortem report. “We’re sending the documents to the CID for investigation,” he said. “The Chief Secretary is reaching out to the Singapore Ambassador to get the post-mortem details as soon as possible.”
Garg’s body arrived in Delhi by flight from Singapore before heading to Assam, allowing fans and leaders to pay their respects in his home state. The outpouring of grief shows how deeply Zubeen Garg inspired generations with his music and down-to-earth personality.
