Assam’s new plan promises young people a chance to earn abroad
Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled the CM‑FLIGHT initiative on Sunday, a bold program that will train the state’s youth in Japanese and connect them to jobs in Japan.
Under the scheme, students who pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) at level N2 will receive a five‑year work visa. They could earn up to ₹2 lakh a month in Japan. The cost of training will be split by Assam and the Japanese government – ₹1 lakh from the state, ₹50 000 from Japan, and only ₹30 000 from the student.
“During Advantage Assam 2.0 we signed three MoUs with Japan for language training and placement,” Sarma told reporters. Agencies such as ASEAN One, Jaceex Ventures and Meiko Career Partners will run the courses and help secure jobs under Japan’s Specified Skilled Worker visa.
The programme aims to tackle unemployment in Assam by giving local youth a gateway to international jobs. In addition to the visa, the government will offer a ₹1.5 lakh subsidy for language training and short‑term paid work in Japan.
Sarma highlighted that talks are already underway with South Korea and Germany to open similar opportunities for Assamese students. CM‑FLIGHT aligns with Assam’s vision of a globally‑competent workforce and a stronger position as a hub for international talent.
This initiative could turn Assam’s workforce into a competitive export, boosting livelihoods and providing students with real‑world experience abroad. ()
