PM Modi Launches Key Projects in Assam’s Darrang District
In a big boost for Assam’s growth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off three major health and infrastructure projects in Mangaldoi, Darrang district, on Sunday. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma joined him for the event, where these initiatives got the green light with a whopping Rs 6,300 crore investment.
The star projects include the Darrang Medical College and Hospital, costing Rs 570 crore. This new facility will become Assam’s 24th medical college, welcoming 100 MBBS students every year. It will also house a GNM School for 40 students and a BSc Nursing College for 60 students annually. Once ready, it will fill a huge gap in healthcare and medical education for Darrang and nearby areas. The CM shared that construction should wrap up in just three years, meeting a long-time demand of locals.
Next up is the massive Guwahati Ring Road project, with Rs 4,530 crore poured in. Spanning 121.43 km, it splits into three sections to ease traffic around Guwahati. The first 55-km stretch runs from Baihata Chariali to Sonapur via Kuruwa and Chandrapur, featuring a four-lane road, six-lane bridges—including the 2.9-km Kuruwa-Narengi bridge over the Brahmaputra—and five more bridges, three flyovers, and three road over-bridges.
The second section upgrades a four-lane road to six lanes from Jayanagar underpass on NH 27 to Jorabat, complete with two flyovers. The third upgrades NH 27 from Baihata to Sonapur. This ring road will act as a smart bypass for Guwahati, letting trucks from West Bengal, Bihar, and beyond zip through the East-West Corridor without city congestion.
Tied to this is the Kuruwa-Narengi connecting bridge over the Brahmaputra, at Rs 1,200 crore. It will link key areas and boost connectivity.
Speaking at the event, CM Sarma hailed PM Modi as the architect of a "New India" that’s transforming Assam. He said these Rs 6,300 crore projects in Darrang open fresh doors for the state’s development. The Guwahati Ring Road will tie Guwahati to Darrang and Morigaon districts, sparking economic growth and new satellite towns.
Sarma revealed PM Modi announced Rs 18,000 crore worth of projects for Assam across Darrang and Golaghat—something no past government matched. On behalf of Assamese people, he thanked the PM for pushes like the Namrup Fertiliser Plant, Tata Semiconductor Project in Jagiroad, and a big power plant in Dhubri’s Chapar. Soon, the Baihata Chariali to Tezpur road will become a four-lane highway too.
The CM highlighted recent wins, like the Bharat Ratna honor for Bhupen Hazarika, which warmed every Assamese heart, and the Union Cabinet’s nod for an IIM in Assam. More projects are in the pipeline, he added, setting Assam on track to become a developed state.
Sarma noted how Assam has shifted from terrorism and unrest to peace and progress over the last five years, thanks to public support. "Today, we embrace new hope and build a New Assam," he said.
The event saw MP Dilip Saikia’s welcome speech, with Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Ministers Keshab Mahanta and Jayanta Mallabaruah, MLAs Basanta Das and Paramananda Rajbongshi, and others in attendance. These steps promise smoother travel, better health services, and stronger economy for Assam’s Darrang district and beyond.
