Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off a huge rally in Bettiah, West Champaran, on Saturday, calling the Bihar Assembly elections a showdown between “development and jungle raj.”
The rally followed a record voter turnout in the state’s first round of polls. BJP leaders in the NDA coalition said the high turnout shows growing support for their government.
When speaking to thousands, Modi linked history to his message, noting that in 1937 the Vande Mataram flag was broken into pieces, a move he said helped spark partition. He urged voters to reject the “katta sarkar” – the gun‑wielding regime of the RJD‑led alliance – and to back those who promise peace and progress.
Former Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti echoed Modi’s call.“Do the people of Bihar want a government of goons and guns or a government of development?” she asked. She highlighted gains in women’s empowerment and farmers’ welfare since 2014 under the NDA rule.
BJP MP Sunil Kumar of Valmiki Nagar said Champaran used to be known as “mini‑Chambal” because of dacoit gangs. He credited Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s administration for ending that era. He added that investments in schools, jobs and infrastructure brought good governance to all.
MP Sanjay Jaiswal told the state once had over 245 dacoit gangs and that poor families were unsafe. “Good governance ended that,” he said. “The record turnout shows people trust the current government. We’ll win all 21 seats here.”
Bihar minister and BJP candidate Renu Devi from Bettiah said the strong first‑phase turnout makes the NDA victory “certain.” “The RJD can never win again,” she said. “The people remember the jungle raj.”
MLA Umakant Singh recalled “In the past, Bihar was ruled by bullets and sticks. Children carried guns instead of books.” He added that in the last 20 years development has reached every village, with schools, colleges and roads now built.
