On Sunday, the streets of Cuttack, Odisha, turned chaotic during the traditional Durga Puja idol immersion. A clash sparked when police refused to allow a bike rally, a move meant to curb possible communal tensions. The denial sparked stone‑petting that hurt 25 people, including eight officers.
BJD Rajya Sabha MP Sulata Deo slammed the outing. Speaking to , she reminded the public that Cuttack is known for its people‑of‑different‑faiths harmony – Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians all celebrate together. “What happened is very unfortunate,” Deo said. “The current BJP‑led government can’t keep law and order or protect women. Crime has gone up since they took power.”
Police moved quickly. Commissioner Suresh Debadutta Singh explained that the rally request was denied because authorities feared the event could spark communal discord. When the protestors refused to back down, the police tried to block the road. Eight policemen were hit by stones and suffered minor injuries – they were later removed by force. All four injured in the earlier night’s stone‑petting were treated and discharged, with only one needing ongoing care, Singh clarified.
An almost 36‑hour curfew has been set for the city to keep the peace. Internet services were temporarily shut down to curb riots and to manage the flow of rumours. Police have warned that anyone spreading false claims that an injured person had died will be arrested.
The incidents have raised fresh concerns. Last night, additional clashes erupted over the same weekend, and police are on high alert around the immersion site. The curfew and internet pause aim to restore calm while authorities investigate the full scope of the conflict.
