In New Delhi, Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, accusing it of repeatedly hurting Sikh feelings by citing the controversial Operation Blue Star.
Kakkar’s criticism came after former Union Minister P Chidambaram stepped onto the political stage and called Operation Blue Star a “wrong” way to secure the Golden Temple.
“We keep hurting Sikh sentiment,” Kakkar said in an interview with . “Congress never learns from its mistakes. Even today, Rahul Gandhi walks hand‑in‑hand with people like Jagdish Tytler, a name that reminds us of past mistakes.” She added that leaders such as Kamal Nath, Tajer and Sajjan Kumar were promoted to high office because Congress still keeps old rivals in power.
Kakkar also accused Congress of blocking police investigations and of creating obstacles for justice. “If they had learned from history, they wouldn’t let controversial figures stay in power,” she said.
At the same time, Chidambaram spoke at the Khushwant Singh Literary Festival 2025 and criticized the Operation Blue Star. He said the 1984 military action, ordered by Indira Gandhi, was the wrong method and that the army should not have entered the Golden Temple. He compared it to the later Operation Black Thunder, which he praised for keeping the army out of the holy site.
Operation Blue Star was a ten‑day military campaign from June 1 to June 10, 1984. On June 6, the Indian army stormed the Golden Temple under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s orders to quell Sikh militancy led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who claimed the temple housed large stockpiles of weapons. The operation sparked fierce criticism, led to the eventual killing of Bhindranwale, and set the stage for Indira Gandhi’s assassination by two Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
