Congress leaders are gathering in Patna today for a landmark meeting of the party’s top decision-making body, the Congress Working Committee (CWC). This marks the first time the group has convened in Bihar, right at Sadaqat Ashram—a spot tied to the state’s rich political history. With Bihar Assembly elections on the horizon in 2025, this event could redefine the party’s game plan not just in the state, but across India.
More than 170 senior figures are showing up, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. You’ll also spot chief ministers from Karnataka, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh—Siddaramaiah, A. Revanth Reddy, and Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Heavyweights like Ashok Gehlot, Shashi Tharoor, and Sachin Pilot are on the list too, making it a powerhouse lineup.
Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal called the gathering “historic” ahead of the event. He pointed to Bihar’s deep links to the party’s roots, from Mahatma Gandhi’s Champaran Satyagraha to leaders like Rajendra Prasad and Babu Jagjivan Ram. In a post on X, Venugopal said Bihar sits at a “crossroads between the politics of hope and justice, and the politics of hate, violence, and constitutional subversion.” He stressed that the meeting underlines Congress’s strong commitment to Bihar’s people.
The timing feels tense, especially with cracks in the INDIA bloc alliance, mainly between Congress and partner RJD over seat-sharing for the Bihar polls. Congress leaders push for a fair deal, wanting all allies to get an even shot at winnable seats.
Expect big talks on hot-button issues: rising inflation, joblessness, women’s safety, electoral reforms, and a clear path forward for the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. The group might also approve resolutions slamming what they call the BJP’s tricks to game the system, like the flawed Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Bihar.
Venugopal gave a shoutout to the recent Voter Adhikar Yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi and opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav, which spotlighted voter rights and fair elections.
Overall, this Patna meetup aims to fire up Congress workers in Bihar and send a united front as national challenges mount.
