Suvendu Adhikari Files Contempt Petition Against Bengal Assembly Speaker Over Mamata Banerjee’s Security Exemption

In a bold move shaking up West Bengal politics, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has dragged Assembly Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay to the Calcutta High Court. On Thursday, Adhikari filed a contempt of court petition, slamming the Speaker for giving Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee a special "security exemption" that allegedly breaks a court order.

Adhikari argues that the Speaker’s call to let Mamata Banerjee bring her personal bodyguards into the assembly hall goes against a recent ruling from the Calcutta High Court. This high-profile case now sits with a single-judge bench, and insiders say it could hit the courtroom next week.

Let’s rewind a bit. Just days ago, Justice Amrita Sinha’s bench dropped a clear directive: No legislator in West Bengal can step into the assembly premises with their own bodyguards. The rule aims to keep things fair and secure inside the state Assembly, following strict legal guidelines.

But the Speaker pushed back, saying the ban applies to everyone—ruling party or opposition—but not the Chief Minister. Adhikari isn’t buying it. On Monday, he rushed back to Justice Sinha’s bench, calling the exemption a straight-up contempt of court. "All MLAs are equal in the assembly," Adhikari insists. "No one, not even the CM, gets a free pass to ignore the rules."

The drama unfolded when the Speaker okayed Mamata Banerjee’s entry with her security detail, sparking outrage from the opposition. Adhikari’s team wants the court to crack down hard on this violation.

Justice Sinha greenlit the petition, paving the way for a showdown next week. Adhikari’s lawyers also urged the High Court to order the assembly to save all CCTV footage from the premises. They say this video evidence could prove key in exposing any rule-breaking during the proceedings.

This West Bengal Assembly controversy has everyone talking— from security protocols to power plays in the state legislature. As the hearing approaches, all eyes are on how the Calcutta High Court will handle this clash between the opposition and the ruling Trinamool Congress. Stay tuned for updates on this escalating political battle.
