On Tuesday, lawyers inside the Patiala House Courts complex in Delhi decided to stop work entirely on Thursday, November 6, in protest against what they call an “unlawful” move by the Gurgaon Special Task Force (STF) that has implicated a Delhi‑based lawyer in a murder case.
The decision came after a quick meeting of the Coordination Committee of all district courts’ bar associations in Delhi. The committee’s chair, V.K. Singh, and secretary Anil K. Basoya confirmed that all members agreed to strike. “We can’t let the STF take such high‑handed actions that attack the independence of our profession,” they said.
The case in question is about Advocate Vikram Singh, who was named by police simply because he represented a co‑accused in a separate trial. The committee called the move “a direct attack on the rule of law” and said it was designed to intimidate lawyers from doing their job.
The strike is meant to send a clear message: Delhi lawyers will not tolerate police actions that undermine the legal system. The committee wrote in a circular that they will support Vikram Singh fully and demand the case be dropped immediately.
All district court bar associations in Delhi were urged to have every lawyer on strike and to stay away from court activities on November 6. The Coordination Committee said it would do everything it could to protect lawyers’ rights and professional independence.
The move follows a wave of tensions between legal professionals and law enforcement across India, with many lawyers saying that police intimidation can erode public confidence in the justice system. The strike has already drawn attention from reporters covering Delhi’s justice sector.
