Hyderabad, Nov 7 – Election officials flew in for a surprise check on the homes of two Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders just days before the by‑poll that will decide the Jubilee Hills Assembly seat.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) sent “flying squads” – mobile teams that can move quickly – to the residences of former MLA Marri Janardhan Reddy and MLC T. Ravinder Rao. Police from the Central Crime Branch joined the search on the suspicion that money meant for voter distribution was hidden at the houses. Janardhan Reddy’s property in Motijungangah and Ravinder Rao’s home in Rahmat Nagar were inspected.
BRS slammed the visits, calling the searches a political hit. “The ruling Congress is trying to scare our leaders,” the party said, adding that it is only attacking opposition houses while the Model Code of Conduct isn’t yet in force.
Janardhan Reddy stood on the front steps after the sweep, telling reporters that nothing was found in his house. He claimed the Congress is “afraid of losing” and is resorting to “undemocratic” tactics. Speaking of the upcoming election, he said CM A. Revanth Reddy has already gone to 13 different corners of the town for campaign rallies.
Hyderabad‑based Congress leader Ponnam Prabhakar dismissed the allegations. “The flying squads work under the Election Commission,” he said. “If they walk into a house, it’s within their mandate.”
The BRS is preparing to voice its concerns to the top election authority. A delegation, led by parliamentary party chief K. R. Suresh Reddy, will meet Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi Friday evening. The party wants central police to cover the whole constituency on election day and has demanded that elections be monitored by CCTV cameras and a live web‑stream.
In a letter to the CEC, the BRS also asked for measures to stop fake ID‑cards, booth capture and intimidation from the Congress candidate Naveen Yadav.
The by‑poll in Jubilee Hills will go ahead on Nov 11, and Hyderabad’s political scene is watching closely to see how the race unfolds.
