A week‑long Ethiopian delegation arrived in New Delhi on November 6 to learn from India’s Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana, the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM). The visit focused on poverty reduction and women’s economic empowerment, two priorities that both countries share.
During the tour, Ethiopian officials praised NRLM’s flexible design. They noted that the program adapts its structure to fit local needs, a feature that can help Ethiopia refine its own Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP).
The final session brought together key players: H.E. Molalign Asfaw, Ethiopia’s Deputy Ambassador to India; representatives from the World Bank; and Rajeshwari S. M., Director of DAY‑NRLM at India’s Ministry of Rural Development. Delegates represented nine Ethiopian regions, one city administration, and two main sectors.
Sintayehu Demissie Admasu, head of Ethiopia’s Food and Security Coordination Office, highlighted the depth of the exchange. “Indian officials brought real expertise to the table,” she said. She also lauded the program’s community‑based facilitators—called “sakhis”—who provide last‑mile support to rural women.
Ethiopian observers singled out several innovations that could be adapted at home: strong bank linkages, diversified livelihood options, and inter‑departmental coordination. One delegate summed up the message: “Women are the foundation of any economy. Investing in them means investing in the whole world.”
The delegation plans to bring what they learned back to Ethiopia, hoping to strengthen the PSNP. They also invited Indian partners to collaborate on future projects, while the World Bank stressed the importance of government leadership, supportive policy frameworks, and private‑sector involvement.
In closing, Ethiopia’s ambassador underscored the long‑standing partnership between the two nations. He called for ongoing policy dialogue and continuous monitoring so that new programs stay relevant. He also praised India’s leadership in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and urged Ethiopia to adapt these successes to its own context.
The trip reaffirms both countries’ commitment to poverty relief, women’s empowerment and cross‑border cooperation in rural development.
