In Noida this Monday, farmers from 81 villages gathered for a Mahapanchayat and staged a large protest outside the Noida Authority office. They demanded answers about land‑acquisition compensation and the promised plots for them and their families.
Hundreds of farmers arrived early in the morning, many wearing green turbans and carrying union flags. They shouted slogans and blamed the authority for delaying decisions on compensation, rehabilitation, and plot allotment for land taken over the years for development projects.
“We’ve been promised help for years, but nothing moves beyond meetings,” said one farmer. “We’ll no longer return with empty promises.”
Tensions rose when farmers tried to force open the main gate of the office. Security personnel had set up barricades to block entry. A brief scuffle broke out as farmers pushed against the barricades, with police attempting to hold their ground. The confrontation prompted the deployment of additional police forces around the protest site, which were positioned on both sides of the barricades to curb further escalation.
Farmers say the core of their agitation centers on delayed compensation for acquired land, the failure to deliver promised residential and commercial plots, and incomplete implementation of the rehabilitation and resettlement policy. Leader after leader warned that if the government and the Noida Authority do not present concrete measures, the protest could spread across Gautam Buddh Nagar.
During the Mahapanchayat, organizers decided to hold a “strategic meeting” soon with village representatives to plan the next phase of the movement, potentially expanding the protest statewide.
Police kept the area guarded all day, setting up barricades on multiple approach roads to the office and tightening security in nearby sectors to prevent any untoward incidents.
