Five students from VIT University in Amaravati drowned at Vodarevu Beach in Bapatla district, Andhra Pradesh, on Sunday. Rescue teams recovered three bodies but still hunt for two missing students.
The tragedy happened when a group of ten students took a swim in the rough waves at Chirala’s Vodarevu Beach. Strong currents swept away three students – Saketh, Sai Manideep and Jeevan Sathwik – all from Hyderabad. Local fishermen and trained swimmers attempted a rescue, but they could not pull the students to safety. The bodies washed ashore and were later moved to Chirala’s government hospital for autopsies. Police have informed the students’ families.
Meanwhile, another student named Somesh and a local, Goutham, are still missing. Police, fire services and fisheries officers keep searching with powerful lights and boats. Superintendent of Police Uma Maheshwar visited the beach to oversee the operation, and senior officials monitored progress.
Weekend crowds regularly fill Suryalanka and Vodarevu beaches. Despite local warnings about dangerous spots, many people still take risks in the surf. In a related incident, two police constables bravely rescued four youths at Manginapudi Beach near Machilipatnam, again illustrating the danger of splashing in unfamiliar waters.
Authorities urge anyone planning a beach outing in Andhra Pradesh to heed safety notices and stay aware of wave conditions.
