In New Delhi, a heated exchange erupted between Congress leader Rashid Alvi and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju over the right to freedom of expression in India.
Rijiju, in an interview with on Saturday, slammed Congress attendees for what he called the misuse of free‑speech rhetoric. He warned that those who claim their voices are being silenced are actually pushing a divisive agenda that could split the nation. The minister accused members of the opposition party of stoking unrest in Jammu and Kashmir and the North East, and of using slogans about Article 370 to drive separatism. He also said that Congress frequently attacks Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the guise of dissent, while demanding that there be no space for criticism.
Rashid Alvi responded that freedom of expression is a core constitutional right and cannot be stripped away. He denied claims that the Election Commission would remove the Bihar voter list, stating that such a move would infringe on basic civil liberties. Aiming to defend the right to speak openly, Alvi said that without freedom of expression, politicians would be unable to voice their concerns, including critical commentary about the government.
Both sides accused each other of twisting the meaning of free speech. While Rijiju blamed Congress for fueling division, Alvi argued that the opposition uses the concept of free expression to further an anti‑government strategy. The debate highlights the intense scrutiny that India’s political arena faces regarding the balance between national security and civil liberties.
