Bengaluru’s Basavaraj Bommai, a former chief minister and BJP MP, is praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government for slashing taxes on everyday items as a special Dussehra gift to Indians. This move eases the financial load on families just in time for the festive season.
Bommai shared his thoughts on X, highlighting how the 2017 GST rollout was a game-changer. He also credited Modi for smooth handling of taxes during the COVID crisis to support states. Now, with the economy in focus, the government has zeroed in on reforms: most goods—about 90%—face just 5% GST, while some key items sit at 18%. This boils down to two simple tax slabs, making life easier for businesses and shoppers.
Farmers stand to gain big, Bommai said. Taxes on tractors, tillers, fertilizers, and other farm tools have dropped, helping rural families save money. Everyday essentials like curd, milk, and ghee should get cheaper too, proving the government’s commitment to the poor. These GST changes could save people around Rs 2 lakh crore in taxes overall, while fixing the inverted duty structure to boost small industries directly.
Bommai sees this as a major push toward Modi’s vision of a self-reliant India and a five-trillion-dollar economy. He urged everyone to rally behind these national efforts.
But Bommai didn’t hold back on the Karnataka state government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He slammed them for piling on extra taxes worth Rs 1 lakh crore in just two years, calling it anti-people. Right after taking power, the Congress administration hiked prices on petrol, motor vehicles, stamp duty, and excise duties—making basics like milk and even water more expensive.
Things got wilder, Bommai claimed: the state even taxed water and air, plus a special garbage fee in Bengaluru. “People are fed up and asking if Siddaramaiah will finally cut these burdens now that the PM has led by example,” he added.
