Hyderabad Metro takeover imposed Rs 15,000 crore debt on people, alleges KTR

In Hyderabad, BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao has slammed the Telangana Congress government for slapping an extra Rs 15,000 crore debt on the state’s people through what he calls a reckless takeover of the Hyderabad Metro project. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, KTR accused Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of letting personal grudges, arrogance, and a dictatorial style push construction giant L&T to suddenly pull out of the project.

KTR tied the mess directly to L&T’s refusal to fix the Medigadda barrage for free. That barrage is a key part of the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project, built when BRS was in power. He claimed Revanth Reddy wanted to use the repairs to fuel propaganda painting Kaleshwaram as a total failure. When L&T said no to footing the bill themselves, it sparked the CM’s anger, leading the government to target and harass the company until they had no choice but to leave Telangana.

KTR painted a stark picture of how BRS nurtured the Hyderabad Metro project starting in 2014, when just 20-25% of the work was done. Under then-Chief Minister KCR’s personal guarantees, L&T ramped up efforts, and Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the first phase in 2017. Even during the COVID-19 crisis, when L&T worried about losses, KCR stepped in with a Rs 3,000 crore soft loan—releasing Rs 900 crore right away to keep things moving. Ridership soared to 5 lakh passengers a day, the network stretched to 69 km, and it became India’s second-largest metro system, linking major IT corridors.

But under Congress rule, KTR alleged, Revanth Reddy wrecked plans for the Airport Metro line, tried to blackmail L&T over Medigadda repairs, and shifted projects to his inner circle. Despite L&T’s lease running until 2070, the company got forced out, he said, all because of the CM’s revenge tactics and a grab for the Metro’s prime 280 acres of land.

This move piles on Telangana’s already huge Rs 2.2 lakh crore debt, with zero real benefits, KTR argued. He called the whole thing a shady plot to snag commissions and kickbacks, hand land to Revanth Reddy’s buddies, and skip any Cabinet approval. KTR demanded a central government investigation and vowed that BRS would rally the public to expose how a Rs 20,000 crore asset from their era turned into a Rs 15,000 crore headache under Congress.
