A video of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA issuing a shocking threat to BJP leaders has gone viral on social media, sparking a major political controversy in West Bengal.
The MLA, Abdur Rahim Boxi, who represents the Malatipur Assembly constituency in Malda district, was filmed at a public meeting on Saturday evening. In the clip, he is heard issuing a violent warning to BJP leaders to stop labeling Bengali-speaking migrant workers as "illegal Bangladeshi or Rohingya infiltrators."
The purported video shows Boxi making graphic threats. He is heard saying, “I will pour acid down his throat in such a way that his voice will become silent forever.” He also threatened to “pluck out the eyes” of a BJP legislator, stating, “The eyes through which the BJP leader views the people of West Bengal as Bangladeshis will be plucked out.”
Although he did not name anyone directly, his comments are believed to be aimed at Shankar Ghosh, the Chief Whip of the BJP in the West Bengal Assembly. Ghosh had recently referred to the identification of illegal infiltrators in various states during a session in the Assembly.
The public meeting was organized to protest the alleged harassment and killings of Bengali-speaking people, especially migrant workers, in BJP-ruled states. Boxi also called for a boycott of the BJP and urged people to destroy the party’s flags.
So far, the Trinamool Congress leadership has not commented on the viral video or the MLA’s inflammatory statements.
In response, the BJP claimed that such threats are not surprising and are part of the prevailing culture within the Trinamool Congress. The incident is expected to intensify the ongoing political feud between the TMC and the BJP in West Bengal.
