India warns of a new wave of attacks from Pakistan‑backed terror groups as the cold winter approaches the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. Intelligence agencies say Lashkar‑e‑Taiba (LeT) and Jaish‑e‑Mohammed (JeM), backed by Pakistan’s military services, are regrouping and planning fresh raids.
After Operation Sindoor in early 2024, which knocked out many LeT cells, new reports from NDTV and other intelligence sources show the groups are training and re‑organising. Drones are now flying along vulnerable ridges of the LoC, with LeT units mapping gaps for future “fidayeen” strikes—terrorists who die in their attacks— or aerial supply drops.
Border Action Teams, made up of former special forces and trained militants, have been moved back into Pakistani‑occupied Kashmir (PoK). Meetings in PoK last month, attended by senior members of ISI, Jamaat‑e‑Islami, and Hizbul Mujahideen, confirmed plans to reactivate dormant cells. They are also reviving sleeper networks inside the valley, offering monthly payments to ex‑commanders, and giving orders to avenge losses from earlier operations.
The ISI, facing international pressure, appears to be doubling down on its old strategy of destabilising India from the outside. LeT operatives are expanding their human‑intelligence networks, identifying local sympathisers and building supply lines. New routes for smuggling arms and drugs are emerging, similar to patterns seen in Punjab and Rajasthan.
India’s Northern Command is on high alert. Trishul, the tri‑service exercise on the western border, coincides with the cold‑season period when infiltration usually drops. Analysts warn that this year could break that trend and that attacks may increase despite the harsh weather.
The government calls the intelligence a “critical warning.” Operation Sindoor, which dismantled many terror cells, could be launched again. The stakes are high: beyond territorial security, these strikes threaten the budding normality that local elections and the return of tourists are trying to rebuild.
The quiet along the LoC may soon be disrupted by another fidayeen attack, drone drop or test of India’s resolve to keep the region safe.
