Kolkata, Sep 27 – The Calcutta High Court has a new Acting Chief Justice: Justice Sujay Paul. He steps into the role as Justice Soumen Sen prepares to take over as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.
The Union Ministry of Law and Justice announced this change in a notification on Friday. Justice Paul originally served as a judge at the Madhya Pradesh High Court. This year, authorities transferred him first to the Telangana High Court in 2024, and then to the Calcutta High Court earlier on.
The shift comes after the previous Chief Justice, T.S. Sivagnanam, retired on September 15. At that time, Justice Sen stepped in as Acting Chief Justice. But his time in the top spot was short-lived – the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, had already recommended him for the Meghalaya High Court job.
Justice Sen has been a key figure at the Calcutta High Court since joining as a judge on April 13, 2011. His full tenure there runs until July 26, 2027, and he’s handled many high-profile cases during that period. One big moment that put him in the spotlight involved a clash with fellow judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who later became a BJP Lok Sabha member from West Bengal’s Tamluk constituency.
The tension boiled over when a division bench led by Justice Sen overturned a ruling from Gangopadhyay’s single-judge bench. The dispute grew so serious that the Supreme Court stepped in, moving the case away from the Calcutta High Court to resolve it.
This latest judicial appointment highlights ongoing changes in India’s high court leadership, ensuring smooth transitions amid key transfers and retirements.
