Kashmir’s Gulmarg Gandola resumes operations from today

The iconic Gulmarg Gondola in Jammu and Kashmir swung back into action on Tuesday, September 30, delighting tourists after a week of essential safety upgrades. Officials confirmed that all key tests on cables, cabins, and load-bearing systems went off without a hitch, clearing the way for smooth commercial rides.

This restart kicks off Phase I operations with a boosted capacity, letting more visitors enjoy a comfy and quick trip up one of the world’s highest cable cars. If you’re an adventure lover or just seeking stunning views, now’s the time to head to Gulmarg—officials are rolling out the welcome mat to boost the area’s booming tourism scene.

The gondola took a short break from September 22 to 29 for its yearly inspection and maintenance. Certified engineers dove into the mechanical and electrical systems to meet global safety standards, ensuring every ride stays safe and reliable.

Standing as the world’s second-longest and second-highest cable car—behind only Bolivia’s Mi Teleferico and China’s Jade Dragon Snow Mountain—the Gulmarg Gondola ferries up to 600 people hourly across two stages. It climbs from the Gulmarg resort at 2,650 meters to Kongdoori Station in a scenic valley, then pushes higher to 3,980 meters on Kongdoori Mountain, right below the Apharwat Peak at 4,260 meters. Perfect for skiing, sightseeing, or soaking in the Himalayan vistas.

This marvel comes from a partnership between the Jammu and Kashmir government and France’s Pomagalski company. They built the first phase in 1998, linking Gulmarg to Kongdoori, and wrapped up the second stage in just two years for about Rs 18 crore, opening it on May 28, 2005. That upper stretch features 36 cabins and 18 towers, whisking groups of six passengers at a time—nine minutes to the first stop and 12 to the second.

Rides run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting at both levels. Whether you’re chasing snow sports or epic panoramas, the Gulmarg Gondola keeps drawing crowds and putting Kashmir’s tourism on the map.
