JD(U) leader KC Tyagi has fired back at Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut over his sharp criticism of the Indian cricket team’s actions during the Asia Cup final. Tyagi praised the team’s bold move to snub the trophy from Pakistan Cricket Board chief and Asian Cricket Council chairman Mohsin Naqvi, calling it a strong stand for India’s pride and honor.
Raut stirred the pot by sharing a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav shaking hands with Naqvi, chatting over tea, and posing for photos at the tournament’s start. In a press conference, Raut slammed what he called “fake patriots” in the BJP, saying real supporters skipped watching the match. “You didn’t take the trophy from PCB chief Naqvi, but the Indian captain was all smiles with him. Do you think the public is fool?” Raut asked.
He went further, questioning why India even played Pakistan amid ongoing tensions, including the sacrifices of soldiers and civilians in places like Pahalgam. “If you played the match, drop the drama,” Raut said, labeling the post-match trophy refusal as pure “nationalist theater” for the cameras. In his X post, he added, “Just 15 days ago, they were shaking hands and smiling with Pakistan’s minister Mohsin Naqvi. Now? Full-on show for the cameras. If patriotism runs deep, you wouldn’t step on the field with Pakistan.”
Tyagi, responding to Raut’s jabs, suggested the MP was falling into the same trap as the Congress party. “Not accepting the trophy from the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman shows India’s pride. I applaud the Indian team for standing firm,” he said.
The controversy erupted after India’s thrilling Asia Cup victory over Pakistan. The Indian players celebrated their win without the physical trophy, instead holding up imaginary ones on stage in a gesture that highlighted national sentiment. Cricket fans and political circles are buzzing about this mix of sports triumph and patriotic symbolism.
