Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan shared his deep sorrow over a deadly stampede at a public rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district. The tragic crowd crush during actor and TVK leader Vijay’s event claimed 36 lives, including eight children and 16 women, on September 27, 2025.
In a post on X, Vijayan wrote, “Deeply saddened by the tragic stampede that occurred in Karur, Tamil Nadu. Heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. Wishing a speedy and complete recovery to all those injured. Kerala stands with the people of Tamil Nadu in this hour of grief.”
Vijay himself posted on X, expressing heartbreak over the incident. “My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital,” he said.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin responded quickly with support for the victims. He announced Rs 10 lakh in compensation for each family that lost a loved one and Rs 1 lakh for those getting medical treatment. Stalin also set up a one-member Commission of Inquiry, led by retired High Court Judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan, to investigate the Karur stampede and report back to the government.
In his statement, Stalin shared his shock and pain. “On receiving the heartbreaking news that 36 people, including eight children and 16 women, lost their lives in the crowd crush at the political campaign meeting of Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam in Karur today, I was deeply shocked and pained,” he said. He called the loss “irreparable” and promised top medical care for the injured, along with full government help for affected families.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also weighed in on X, offering his thoughts to those hit hardest by the Tamil Nadu rally tragedy. “The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured,” Modi posted.
Leaders across India continue to rally support as investigations into the Karur stampede begin, highlighting the need for better crowd safety at public events.
